Excellent Amazon seller

Ordered the knives as a gift and was shipped from an Amazon seller. Received in just a few days, impressed with the knives and the seller. Would not hesitate to buy from them again.

If you're afraid of super-sharp, stay away from this

by Homie from NY, USA on 2010-06-22
Wow! Talk about sharp. I cut a grape paper-thin just for the fun of it. The knife has a very good heft to it, and a strange sense of balance. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it feels like it wants to move forward during the cut thereby making it easier to use. On first impression, it's one of the best knives I've ever owned. OK, it was a Father's Day gift, but I still own it.

knife is freaking amazing

by J. J. Rosenfeld from on 2010-06-16
I got this knife because one of my customers sells it. Before I always would use a Henckells, and disdain any other knife.this is an awesome kitchen tool, as a chef's knief, but with the ability to control it and use it for paring and many other functions becasue of the size and handle design.I would give this knife as a gift to a Top Chef master.

Great knife

This was a gift for my husbands birthday that he had been asking for. He absolutely loves it!! It is very sharp and cuts everything so easily.

Handle is Slippery

by CAL Consumer from on 2010-03-26
I really like these knives. I am used to wood handled knives and these are ceramic and metal. I did find them very slippery if they got wet at all. Cuts great, look great, holds a good edge, ergonomically exceptional, just a slippery handle.

Best All Around Kitchen Knife

by Patricia A. Nelson from Omaha, NE USA on 2010-07-24
We have owned two of these - (sadly one must have gone in the garbage accidentally while dumping peels or something...). The lost one was quickly replaced and now I'm back to get another one because this one is always in the sink needing to be washed because we use it all the time. Sharpens beautifully - feels good in my medium sized hand as well as my husband's big "paw". Highly recommend!

over rated

by Michael Arsenault from on 2009-12-21
I bought this knife based on its high rating. Sorry to say that I can't stand it. It's not ergonomically correct for my hand and is very uncomfotable for me to use. And the blade actually has very slight knicks in the cutting edge.

Lasts a lifetime

by S. Gentile from Boston, MA on 2009-10-22
My mother insisted I buy this EXACT knife because it's the exact same one she got when she was first married 27 years ago. Sure enough, it came and looks and feels exactly the same as the knife I've used for 20+ years when at my parents' house. So I know firsthand that this knife wares amazingly -- my brand new one looks exactly the same as the 27 year-old one. And cuts so well -- the perfect knife for everyday use with meats, veggies, fruits, etc. I'm glad I took the advice to get it. It really is worth the money.

The one knife I use every day

by J. Wise from Cali-fornia on 2009-10-02
After about 10 years using this knife, I recently broke the tip in a coconut accident. I know I was asking a little too much of it but it goes to show the expectations I had for it after so many years of use. I looked around at replacement sets, even much more expensive ones, but ultimately I opted just to replace this knife. It came very sharp, cut myself twice in the first week. I continue to use it every day as it is the most versitile of all my knives. It is particularly useful in fine fruit cuts which I seem to be doing every day for my 2 childen.

Description

Trying to cut through meat with a dinner knife is a recipe for disaster, as in Caribbean Jerk Pork Chops meet wool blend trousers. Provide each place setting with its own steak knife for a much more enjoyable dining experience.

From one of Henckels' moderately priced cutlery lines, these four steak knives will divide any rib-eye, chop, or roast into bite-size pieces. The thin, curved blades are perfect for precise cutting, though their fine serrations tend to tear meat fibers rather than slice neatly through them. Stamped from high-carbon stainless steel, these knives are lighter in weight than forged knives and don't have bolsters, which might not be essential when confronting a thick prime rib. The synthetic handles feature classic three-rivet styling with full tangs for strength. The knives are dishwasher-safe and they carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

  • 4-1/2-inch serrated blades slice steaks, chops, roasts
  • Made of high-carbon stainless steel with synthetic handles
  • Dishwasher safe

Excellent steak knives!

by Jim Belew from Addison Texas on 2010-05-10
I bought this set of Henckel knives to compliment a set we purchased several years ago. The original set has a butcher, paring, boning, and steak (4) knives along with a sharpener. We have enjoyed this set so much that we wanted 4 more of the steak knives and estatic when we found them at Amazon. They are the best steak knives for the money and will compliment anyones cutlery.

Interesting blade design, I love it.

by Hans Owens from Twin Falls, Idaho on 2010-05-06
Easily the best steak knives on the market under $20/each. I have used real high end steak knives before($100+ per knife) and these are not much different. There is no point in spending that much unless you have extra money to blow. The blade design is great for cutting through fat on a rib-eye. High-end stainless, does not fade in the dishwasher. Like the other review said, it does "tear" through the meat but that is ok, it is still a fairly clean cut. Easily cut the fat off the edge of a new york strip steak like its butter.

New Knives

After 20 years we replaced our knives with these new Henckel's. They are wonderful. Smooth edges instead of serrated and like much better. Great quality for the price.

Truth in Labeling

by Amazon Supporter from Foster City, CA on 2010-01-27
These appear to be excellent knives and I would probably buy them again, but they are not German cultery, as stated in the specifications. The knives delivered to me were made in Spain. There is nothing wrong with that, but I dinged them one star for providing incorrect basic information.

Another disappointment

by Lysan from on 2010-09-02
I've got a $4.95 paring knife that cuts and slices better and easier than this one. Just like the kitchen shears I bought from Henckels, I'm very disappointed in this item. Expected much better quality for the price. Good-bye Henckels!

The World's Best?

by John Matlock from Winnemucca, NV on 2010-05-24
I'm aware that some other folk prefer other brands of knives, and that's fair. But years ago I started collecting Henckels and have never been disappointed. The blades are good, the handles quite comfortable, the quality is high, the price is fair. This little paring knife is typical and quite useful around the kitchen.

Decent knife

by Ravi Shanghavi from Ottawa, Ontario Canada on 2010-02-27
Purchase this to go with a bunch of other Four star knives I have in my block. It's a decent knife but nothing spectacular. If I didn't care for ascetics as much I'd buy the Victorinox knives as they tend to keep their sharpness. This knife has not, and within a few months of light use it lost it's edge.

Awesome!

by J. M. Wnuk from Glendale, AZ, USA on 2010-08-30
I got these for Christmas from my mom, after falling in love with her set. She got them at Sam's club. These are the best knives I've ever used! (And I've worked in many a professional kitchens plus my in-laws have a tendency to buy the best of everything-including kitchenware even tho they don't cook! haha) The block is very nice and well weighted. The knives all have great balance and a nice weight to them. I haven't cut myself (I'm a former girl scout & culinary student, so i've been threw tons of knife safety classes haha) but they are definitely sharp enough to do the job if one wasn't careful. I love how sturdy these knives are, no bending, curving or warping. I'm planning on buying Wolfgang's Santoku set to pair with this set, since it doesn't include Santoku's-this set's only downfall. Luckily, for the price, the other set is still well within budget! Love love love these knives! I fully recommend!

wolfgang's knives

by Pamela Stewart from on 2010-07-24
These knives are so sharp, it is almost dangerous. Everyone in the family has cut themselves once. They must be placed downward in the dishwasher. They cut through anything! I love that they have the names of what each knife is for. My daughter, 22, can find the bread knife without asking. I bought them for my son and daughter-in-law because they were so good. They love them too.

Best Steak Knives Around

by Clyde H. Hedlund from on 2010-05-01
I got these as a gift and the steak knives are the best I've used. You get eight (8) of them in the set, which is quite a bargain for they are much heavier weight than most steak knives and cut very well, especially for kids learning proper table manners and who have difficulty slicing food on their plate. With supervision and these knives, the kids get up to speed real fast and become rather adapt at using them, which impresses grownups sitting next to them because the kid can cut without help. I also use it as a pairing knife, for it is very sharp and the right length, and slices tomatoes better than the "tomato" knife included in the set. With the exception of the "tomato" knife, all the other knives perform very satisfactory, and with the sharpening steel included, there's no excuse for not keeping the blades aligned and sharp at all times. Yes, I do wash and sterilize the knives in the dishwasher, contrary to what the manufacturer recommends, and have not notice any deterioration in performance. I am actually thinking of purchasing another set just to have on hand extra steak knives. Of course, the knives do spot or rust if kept in the sink a few days before washing. But a paper towel with a little stainless steel cleaner and rubbing removes them.

Buyer Beware

by E. Balboa from Texas on 2010-03-17
Bought these knives at Sam's Club for my daughter for Christmas. We have taken great care to wash and dry them after each use. However after 2 months of use, there are rust spots all over them. I am negotiating their return with wphousewares. Will update when I found out if they support their products. Personally I would NOT buy these again!

MADE IN CHINA

by John Yezeguielian from Northern Colorado on 2009-10-14
I just got this knife in, haven't even taken it out of the packaging yet. It may be a fine blade for the money, looks nice enough, BUT... the reason I bought it was because it was supposedly from France. Sam's Club sells a pair of similar knives, made in Brasil, for $13.00, but I bought these specifically because they were not from China (when so much is these days.) Nowhere did it say "Made in China". I feel this is deceptive, and will probably return it unopened because of that fact. Why am I opposed to Chinese products? They make goods far less expensive, but are usually junk. If I wanted to buy Made In China, I could do that from ANYWHERE, no need to have them shipping this thing in a box that's exponentially larger than the knife itself. (Not to mention that China is systematically taking ownership of the world this way, and I don't care to live under Chinese rule.)All that gas, packaging, etc., to deliver a Chinese-made kitchen blade? No thanks.

Solid, balanced knife

by Steven N. Iberri from Orange, CA, USA on 2009-09-16
I'd been using a really low quality chef's knife from a knife set for years, and I was interested in the Forschner knife, but at $30+ now, I wasn't willing to pay for one. After reading the reviews on this knife, I figured it was worth adding it to an order for $10...It is very sharp. It will stick in potatoes and onions if you try to chop right through a thick part because it leaves such a flat cut surface on the vegetable that it suctions to the side of the blade. A light slice on the skin of any tomato gets right through to the flesh. It is balanced right where the blade meets the handle and is very easy to use with a pinch grip.

Victorinox/Fibrox/Forschner for less

by tomahagne from Elkridge, MD on 2009-03-06
Gloria's review convinced me to give this knife a try. I've translated her review to English. She deserves credit."When I saw the price for this knife, I did not think that it would be very good; I bought it and I am glad I did because this is the best knife I have now in my kitchen, cut with ease, and I have not had that sharp so far. I recommend it!"The Victorinox/Fibrox/Forschner chef's knife has reached ridiculous high prices. It is used exclusively by the crew of Cook's Illustrated magazine / America's Test Kitchen. They've given the Fibrox such a rave review, that the company can barely keep up with demand. It now commands a $30 price tag for a 10" chef's knife. That's ludicrous! The knife was credited for being a great value. That is to say, excellent for the price. But when all is said and done, it's still just a stamped steel knife with a molded plastic handle. I bought an excellent carbon steel knife set (Pinzon with Pakka handles) for that price. An entire 8-piece set! There is no way anyone, let alone Chris Kimball et al, would call that a good value anymore.Enter MIU. This company has been making great kitchen gear for 24 years. Their products span the entire gamut from lowly home cook to professional chef. Both the Fibrox and this MIU have stamped high carbon stainless steel blades and molded anti-microbial plastic handles. That's not rocket-science. From what I've seen from their other products, MIU has a decent team of designers and engineers. I have faith that this knife will be every bit as good if not better than the Fibrox. This is pure speculation so far. I've ordered it and I will update my review after I've tried it.I plan to use this for camp cooking. I don't like to take my nice expensive knives out into the woods where they might rust or I may lose them.

You will not be disappointed!

by Lisa Miraval from Boston on 2010-04-16
I have had this knife for 5 years now and it is the best. I do have a professional sharpener which I use every few months, but before that I had the knife for about 2 years and it was still pretty sharp. I am buying one for my friend as a wedding gift because I cannot imagine a household without one.I use only this knife, a bread knife, and a paring knife for everything, but mostly just this one. The weight is perfect, it is not too heavy, but has enough oomph to chop anything. Great handle design and super easy to clean. Buy it, you will not regret it!

SIMPLY THE BEST

by Honest Abe from San Diego, USA on 2009-10-31
Ok so I will make this brief. The Four Star Henckels are among the highest quality knives available. The 8 inch high carbon chef's knife is the kitchen workhorse. It is extremely sharp (be careful) and handles well even for the novice. I bought a different 4 Star Henckel knife some years ago and it is still very sharp without sharpening it at all. This knife is costly but if you can afford it and especially if you are into food preparation, you won't regret it.

A crusty loaf yields easily to this tough knife, whose serrations are big enough to rate--in knife-speak--as "scallops." Classic three-rivet handles distinguish Pro S from Henckels's other quality lines, TwinStar, Five Star, and Four Star. Pro S handles are heavier and its knives less weight-forward. The steel used in the Pro S line is identical to that of the Five and Four Star lines. High-tech welding of larger knives combines three steel types into what appears to be a single piece, so a knife's parts have distinct characteristics: a hard edge; a strong, stain-resistant bolster; a stain- and corrosion-resistant tang. Traditionalists insist on single-piece forging for strength, but Henckels says the invisible welds are actually stronger than the steel. While this bread knife is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack From the Manufacturer

horrible knife, worthless warranty

After purchasing three other Henckels Pro S Knives (non-serrated) and being satisfied with the quality, we purchased this bread knife assuming the expense would be worth it. BUYER BEWARE. We only used this knife on bread and pastry, always used a cutting board and hand washed it. But after only a couple months use, the serrations not only bent out of shape, but very small fissures, almost like cracks, appeared in the blade. The blade was so jagged the dishcloth would hook on the blade and it was putting little holes in my dishtowels. I packaged it back up in the original packaging and sent it to the Henckels customer relations department, assuming that this reputable company would stand behind the product. But five weeks later I received my knife in the mail with a message that simply said the knife needed professional sharpening. PLUS, they had thrown away the original packaging I had saved specifically in case I ever needed to send the knife in and make use of the warranty, and instead they sent the knife back to me in a cheap disposable plastic sleeve. The fissures in the blade were too deep for sharpening to get out without completely grinding it away. So I tried calling the Customer Relations department THREE times. All times I had to leave messages that were never returned. And beware, it is difficult to find a sharpening service that will sharpen a serrated knife. I could only find places I would have to mail it out to again that said they would try it. I finally took it to my local butcher shop who said they would try to sharpen it but couldn't guarantee I'd be happy with the finished product as the blade was in such beat up condition. By the time they filed out most of the nicks and cracks the tips of the serrations had been filed almost completely away. I was furious that the company hadn't stood behind this expensive knife, as faulty craftsmanship is the only explanation for the condition the knife was in after such a short amount of time. I will never purchase another Henckels knife again simply because the customer service was so terrible and it seems so unfair that I am stuck with this piece of junk knife. Complete waste of of money.

Bread Knife

Bought this knife to complete a set. Another excellent product which perform even better than the high expectations I had for it. Highly recommend!

Excellent knife

Excellent ability to cut breads. Only drawback is that it's a bit too long for our knife block. Just double check on the length of your knife block if this concerns you.

Nice, but not worth 65.00

by Claire from AURORA, Colombia on 2003-12-24
When I was washing the knife I noticed that the fine edge on the serrations had bent over to the non-scalloped side of the blade. I guess i found this a little irritating since i spent a fortune on this knife. It cuts bread fine, but i would not purchase again if i had the choice.

lesser of the 2 Henckels bread knives

A fine knife for most bread but when cutting large, tough loaves it has trouble "finishing" off the bottom of the crust. A better design is a knife with a slight curve, and sure enough Henckels has one of those as well. If you like hearty, thick crusted bread, then spend a few more dollars and buy the 9" instead.

Description

This knife is produced by one of the most respected cutlery manufacturers inthe world. Made of high carbon stainless-steel, it will not stain, pit orrust and will hold its edge. The metal used to construct the blade extendsto the back of the handle which gives the knife perfect balance. The bolsterwhich is the point that rests between your fingers and the blade is smoothand comfortable which makes this knife a pleasure to use when dicing, slicing and mincing. J.A. Henckels has been manufacturing fine cutlery since 1731. Made in Solingen, Germany, its knives are forged, not stamped. Blade density is improved using the FRIODUR ice-hardening process, which provides a sharper initial edge for easier maintenance over time. Larger knives, like this chef's knife, are crafted using Henckels' exclusive SIGMAFORGE?? standard.Features of SIGMAFORGE?? knives are:New one piece constructionHigh forging precisionHigher stability of bladePerfect geometryImproved steel structure for less metal fatigueImproved cutting-edge retention and lasting sharpnessImproved weight and balanceFRIODUR?? ice hardened for maximum no-stain properties and more blade strength

This is a classic French chef's knife, with a broad blade and a curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task. The 8-inch blade suits most cooks, though those with small hands might prefer a 6-inch knife, and those with bigger hands might choose a 10-inch one. Classic three-rivet handles distinguish Pro S from Henckels's other quality lines, TwinStar, Five Star, and Four Star. Pro S handles are heavier and its knives less weight-forward. The steel used in the Pro S line is identical to that of the Five and Four Star lines. High-tech welding of knives this size and larger combines three steel types into what appears to be a single piece, so a knife's parts have distinct characteristics: a hard edge; a strong, stain-resistant bolster; and a stain- and corrosion-resistant tang. Traditionalists insist on single-piece forging for strength, but Henckels says the invisible welds are actually stronger than the steel. While this chef's knife is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack From the Manufacturer

best knife so far

by Bigwig Y from CA on 2010-07-05
I like the feel of the knife in my hand. It has a perfect balance. Mine is 6" and it is the right size for me. I have been using it for more than 8 years and it is still sharp with occasional sharpening with a honing steel.I am sure there are sharper, sturdier, more expensive knives out there, but this is the only chef knife I need.

Henckels 10-inch Chef's knife

by JoeSchmoe155 from NY USA on 2008-10-07
This knife has 2 noticeable drawbacks:1) Not as sharp as it can be right out of the box.2) Spine edges are too sharp - sharp enough to cut yourself. I will have them smoothed out.FYI: 8-inch chef's knife suffers from the same issues. Also: 10-inch is exactly the same weight as 8-inch. The spine of 10-inch is noticeably thinner than the spine of the 8-inch. However, after using it I cannot say it is a drawback - the knife feels right, not too light, not too heavy. There is very little flex. That being said knife does deserve a solid 4. It is very convenient to slice hard cheeses from the large wedge - 8-incher sometimes was too small for this. You definitely need to be very careful with it and you will need a cutting board that is large enough.

A staple in my kitchen.

by "L.A." from at the entrance to Glacier Park on 2008-09-22
Henckels Twin Pro-S Chef's knifes are a staple in my kitchen. The 6 inch knife blade is my favorite. It is easy to hold, the weight and balance make preparing meals enjoyable and I feel like a professional. The edge stays sharp - Even though I should sharpen it more often than I do.

Another great Henckel product.

My husband insisted on upgrading our knives and this is a very welcome addition to our kitchen. It has the capability of being able to be sharpened when it becomes necessary.

Not your best bang for the buck

by Y. Galatzer from MI US on 2008-05-28
I took the knife out of the box, and went ahead to try a tomato. I was amazed to find that it has a hard time with it. Checked my 3 year old never sharpened Mighty Mac (mind you it's a stamped knife and not forged), and without any issue it sliced right through it, so did my cheap Arcos knifes. For over a hundred dollars... What a disappointment, this one is going back promptly, and I'm gonna check out the equivalent Wusthof (and test their claim to fame, and no I'm not a fan).If this was my first PRO knife i might have been excited, but I know you can do a lot better for your money
